I wonder whether military service, compulsory or voluntary, makes one more likely to adopt a “classical nationalist” position? Does the book say anything about that? And is there a difference between serving in unit where everyone is from the same area (say a National Guard unit or a British regiment tied to one county) and a unit that mixes personnel from across the country?

Good question. I don't think the book looks into that, but this is a plausible hypothesis.
