Pile-on can be either abuse, or the respect that thoughtful critics give in order to crash-test your thoughts and see if they survive intact. You should embrace the latter, ignore the former, and proceed in the way that best supports your own needs.

Because at the end of the day, you owe us nothing.

If being piled on, or losing friends / colleagues and being shunned in academia is seriously affecting your quality of life and mental state, then you should do what you need to do to take care of yourself.

Otherwise, I’ve found your articles really insightful and interesting, and it seems like academia deeply needs people like you who are willing to follow the truth where it leads and make arguments based on evidence, rather than submitting to tribalism and groupthink. If that’s sustainable to you, please keep doing it!

Thanks, I appreciate it! Hopefully I don't think I have lost any (real) friends yet.

Perhaps my bias, but you generally frame your posts as if they are more provocative than they actually are (from my perspective. But then again, I’m not on Bluesky)

Says the person who wrote a post about Trump doing something good on immigration. FWIW, cross-posting your piece (which I was still happy to do) had the biggest toll on the number of my subscribers :)
